5 reasons why LOGAN is the best superhero movie of 2017 ( Part 1 )

The least superhero movie of them all became the best that ever was.
With a modest 97 million dollars production budget, the final outing of Hugh Jackman as the enigmatic Wolverine has proven to be somewhat of a dark horse in the running for Superhero movie of the year even with Justice League , Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 , Power Rangers, Transformers and Thor: Ragnarok still yet to air.
The third and final part of the Wolverine Trilogy has the second smallest budget of all the X-Men Franchise and only Deadpool has a smaller production cost ( adjusting for inflation ). So why is Logan garnering such positive reviews despite a much smaller production value ?
- The least Superhero of all Superhero movies
Logan is the exception in a genre whereby viewers turn up looking for a special effects filled movie-going experience with larger than life characters that amazes us and wishing we had powers. Take away the Adamantium claws and failing healing factor and Logan is but a normal man with issues like any of us. For the first time in a very long time, we have a hero we can relate to. Tweak the movie abit and it’s no longer a superhero movie.
James Howlett ( his birth name ) is a war veteran who is now but a glorified Uber driver to the rich . He has a Alzheimer’s stricken father and a illegitimate daughter suffering from Autism . The 3 go on a road trip as a dying Charles tries desperately to fix the mess that is James Howlett’s life.
Suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ( PTSD ) , James has tried Self Mutilation and constant thoughts of suicide and when Charles Xavier passes , he loses all motivation to stay alive until his daughter Laura shows him that Hope is still alive ~~~~
- The movie does not treat the audience like idiots
Show, not tell. That is one sin that most superhero movies directors are guilty of …….. they tell you who to cheer for and why. I would think we are all sick and tired of having our intelligence insulted and ideas shoved down our throats. ( Think John Cena of WWE 😛 for wrestling fans only.) Logan is subtle in terms of many aspects of their storytelling and let’s the viewers come to their own conclusions. Where are all the other X-men ? Where are all the other mutants ? What was the Westchester Incident ? Why the mention of the government taking over the farming of corn and saying it tastes aweful ? Everything links together at the end and it allows you to draw your conclusions.
- No huge explosions and minimal special effects
Excessive special effects tends to take away from the experience of connecting with the characters. Michael Bay is perhaps the director most guilty of blasting fireballs in your face in the hope you will not notice a lack of character development and story. By keeping the superhuman elements and special effects to a minimal, the story and characters have room to breathe and develop, resulting in a more fulfilling movie going experience.
